Regular oil changes keep your engine lubricated, cool and clean. Over time oil breaks down and fills with dirt and combustion byproducts, so changing it on schedule is one of the simplest ways to prevent engine wear and costly repairs.
What does engine oil do?
- Lubricates: Oil forms a thin film between moving metal parts like pistons, bearings and the camshaft, so they do not grind against each other.
- Cools: Oil carries heat away from hot parts of the engine.
- Cleans: Oil picks up dirt, debris and combustion byproducts and carries them to the oil filter.
- Protects: Oil helps seal and protect internal parts from corrosion.
What happens if you skip oil changes?
As oil ages, it loses its ability to protect. It thins or thickens, and contaminants build up. That can lead to:
- More friction and faster wear on internal parts
- Sludge that blocks oil passages
- Higher engine temperatures
- Lower fuel economy
- Major engine damage in severe cases
An oil change costs far less than repairing worn engine parts.
How often should you change your oil?
It depends on your vehicle, the type of oil it uses and how you drive. Follow the schedule in your owner's manual or your car's oil life monitor. Short trips, stop-and-go traffic, towing and Texas heat are harder on oil. If you drive this way often, your manual may call for a shorter interval. When in doubt, ask us and we will look up the schedule for your car.
What are the signs your car needs an oil change?
- The oil change reminder or oil light comes on
- The oil on the dipstick is low, very dark or gritty
- The engine sounds louder or ticks more than usual
- You smell oil or exhaust inside the car
- You are past the date or mileage on your service reminder
Why is an oil change more than just oil?
An oil change is a good time to look at the rest of the car. At R&E Auto Repair, every oil change includes a free digital inspection. Our technicians take photos and notes of what they find, such as leaks, worn belts or low fluids, and send them to your phone. You decide what, if anything, to do next. See our oil change and maintenance service.
If you want to stay on schedule without thinking about it, our VIP Maintenance Plan starts at $120 per month and includes oil and filter changes, scheduled fluid services and quarterly digital health inspections. Details are on our warranty and VIP plan page.
When to see a mechanic
- Oil pressure warning light: Pull over when it is safe and turn off the engine. Driving with low oil pressure can destroy an engine.
- Oil spots under the car: A leak should be found and fixed.
- Burning oil smell or blue smoke: The engine may be leaking or burning oil.
- Needing to add oil often: This points to a leak or internal wear.
